New Year’s Resolution 2: Read

Next resolution up for this week… Remember when I said I don’t read very much? Well not anymore! 2012 is the year of the book for me and I’ve already lined up a list of “must reads” in my iPad. But whether it is digital or a beautifully bound hardback I am determined to read at least 1 book per month- and magazines won’t count!! Here are a few that have already captured my interest:

1. Leaving Van Gogh: A Novel by Carol Wallace.

I love books that teach me something about a history I had no previous knowledge about- and its certainly no secret that I love art. This book is about the untimely death of Vincent Van Gogh and the price he paid for his artistic genius, all told through the perspective of his doctor. I am hoping it also delves into the story behind some of his most famous paintings and the inspiration behind them.

2. Eat, Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert.

They always say that books are better than the movies- well if this is true than I expect to absolutely LOVE this book considering how much I enjoyed the movie. Sometimes I imagine quitting my job and following the same journey around the world. I mean- who wouldn’t want to truly find themselves in this way? Hopefully I will at least be able to enjoy the meditation of reading about someone else’s travels.

3. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

There is nothing like 11th grade English class to make you hate reading classics. But somehow, I left high school still loving this book. I’m hoping to return to it again this year to appreciate the story even more- a era memorialized with fabulous characters and drama. I also want to read it because I’ve been called Daisy Buchanan in the past- but maybe I shouldn’t tell people that because as I remember- its not exactly a good thing!

What are you reading? Any recommendations?

  1. Looks like a good list. I’ve never managed to finish The Great Gatsby myself. It’s one of those books that migrates from one shelf to another, but cunningly manages to avoid being read. I’m keeping my reading list short and sweet this year: ‘Vanity Fair’ by William Thackeray and ‘Workers in the Dawn’ by George Gissing.

  2. Eat Pray Love is 29287348927348723487 times better than the movie. The movie was like a …documentary of Julia in the wild or something, the book actually has substance.
